Assam govt. sets up SIT to probe killings of innocent people in Kokrajhar and Baska districts

Assam government has formed Special Investigation Team, SIT, to investigate the killing of innocent civilians in Kokrajhar and Baksa districts. State Home Commissioner G D Tripathi said that the SIT would look into the conspiracy and mastermind, if any behind the killing.

Meanwhile, indefinite curfew was imposed in Kokrajhar, Baksa and Chirang districts on Friday evening after militants killed 20 persons and injured several others since Thursday. With the recovery of seven more bodies from Narayanguri area of Baksa district, the death toll in the recent violence has risen to 27.

Mr. Tripathi said that no fresh incident of violence has been reported since Friday night. Curfew was also imposed in parts of Dhubri district and high alert sounded in Udalguri district. Official sources said that miscreants also torched down houses and a forest office in Baksa district. Several ministers of the Assam government and senior police officials are camping in Kokrajhar and Baksa district to instill confidence among people.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has instructed the police to deal firmly with the current situation in Bodoland Territorial Area Districts. Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde spoke to the Chief Minister and assured him all possible help to contain the situation.

Expressing deep anguish and sorrow over the killings of innocent people by militants, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has decried the role of sectarian and militant groups.
