Assam Govt set up 36 Tribunals to resolve cases of suspected foreigners

Assam Government has set up 36 Tribunals to resolve cases of suspected foreign nationals illegally staying in the State. Replying to a question in the State Legislative Assembly on Monday, the Minister of State Election Department, Tanka Bahadur Rai informed the House that one lakh fifty seven thousand four hundred sixty five citizens enlisted in the Electoral Rolls have so far been marked as ‘Doubtful’ voters. Of these, the cases of one lakh forty four thousand nine hundred seventy eight have been referred to the Tribunals for settlement. He said the Tribunals have so far declared five thousand five hundred seventy seven doubtful voters as Bangladeshi nationals. The Minister stated that, the citizens declared as foreigners by the Tribunals are being taken to three detention camps set up at Goalpara, Kokrajhar and Silchar Central Jail for deportation.
