Assam govt outlines measures for welfare of tea garden labour community

The Assam government has outlined measures for the welfare of tea garden labour community. In a statement, the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said, it is impossible to think of a developed Assam without ameliorating the plight of the tea garden community. The government, he said, has allocated 110 crore rupees in the last nine years and plans to sanction 20 crore this year for their welfare. Mr. Gogoi said, his government has improved health services in 300 tea gardens in 2010-2011 and plans to supply ambulances to those gardens. Referring to sick gardens and tea factories, the chief minister said the government has taken steps to revive 14 of them under the aegis of Assam Tea Corporation so that the livelihood of the labourers is ensured. Besides, a special scheme has been taken up to construct 50 training centres in tea garden areas for capacity building of youths of the tea community so that they can be self employed.
