Assam govt orders judicial inquiry into recent violence at Sualkuchi town

In Assam, normalcy returns at Sualkuchi town in Kamrup district as curfew has been relaxed for 12 hours from 7 am to 7 pm today.

Curfew was imposed on Saturday after local traders protesting against the selling of imported fabrics in the name of local fabrics, clashed with the security forces. Handloom and Textile minister Ms.Pranati Phookan today said in the Assembly that steps are being taken to protect the interest of the weavers.

More than 25 thousand people of Sualkuchi are engaged in weaving industry which has an annual turnover of 150 crore rupees. The Handloom minister said that Assam government will set up Enforcement Squads across the state to ensure that no traders can sell selected power looms production .

11 handloom products including Gamosa and Mekhela Chodors, have been reserved under National Handloom Reservation Act. She said that 5 yarn bank has already been set up at Sualkuchi and will increase it if required.

Ms.Phookan further said that yarn banks are also being set up in other parts of the state. Assam government has already imposed ban on the selling of imported fabrics in Kamrup district in the name of local clothes.

Meanwhile,government has ordered judicial inquiry to thoroughly look into the matter. On behalf of Home Department, state Forest minister Rockybul Hussain today announced this in state assembly.
