In Assam, government and other organizations have intensified awareness activities to eradicate witchcraft practice rampant in a few districts of the state. Last week, at least 5 people were killed, suspected of practicing witchcraft, in Central and Upper Assam. The evil practice is also rampant in a few places of Lower Assam as well. Various organizations have launched awareness drive in the effected districts. Recently, the Assam State Commission for Women in collaboration with Assam Police, has revived the Project Prahari, an initiative of the state police,started to combat the evil practice. Our correspondent reports, Street drama, distribution of leaflets and awareness meetings are being held in the vulnerable areas of the state.
