Assam Govt. decides to entrust CBI for probe on charges of large-scale corruption

The Assam Government has decided to entrust the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a thorough probe into the charges of large-scale corruption and misuse of funds meant for development in the Mishing Autonomous Tribal Council. The State Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma announced this in the State Legislative Assembly on Wednesday. He was responding to a Zero Hour notice on the issue by the ruling Congress legislator Mr. Rajiv Lochan Pegu. Earlier, the Minister in charge of Welfare of Plains Tribes and Backward Classes, Mrs. Pramila Rani Brahma admitted of large-scale irregularities taking place in the Council in the House. She said there have been instances when the Chief Executive Member (CEM) and Executive Members (EMs) took out money from the Council by giving receipts on blank papers in clear violation of financial rules. The Minister informed the House that the irregularities committed by the Council came to light during the course of investigation through the Northern Assam Divisional Commissioner recently. Citing some examples of irregularities, she said that there was one such instance when a former Chief Executive Member of the Council, Parameshwar Chayengiya withdrew an amount of 67 lakh rupees only by giving a receipt on his pad, while several other Executive Members withdrew lakhs of rupees from the coffers of the Council with personal receipts in clear violation of regulations and no one knows where the money was spent.<br/> The State Assembly also passed a resolution by voice vote for updating the 1951 National Register of Citizens (NRC) based on the electoral rolls of 1971.
