Assam Government, for the first time, began social auditing of Gram Panchayats from today coinciding with Gandhi Jayanati. The month-long auditing will cover 2202 Gram Panchayats under 219 Development Blocks in the state. The main purpose of social auditing is to ensure transparency and check corruption in Panchayati Raj Institutions. It was formally inaugurated at Aamlokhi Gram Panchayat under Baajiagaon Development Block in Nagaon District. On the first day, one panchayat each in 219 Development Blocks is being audited where citizens can raise objections on implementation of various rural development schemes. The state government has also taken initiative to observe Swachhata Utsav on the occassion of Gandhi Jayanti. It is to be continued upto 4th November. Under this, rallies and meetings will be organized by NRHM, Social Welfare,P & RD and Education Department to create awareness on Sanitation and Health related activities.
