Assam govt bans corporal punishment in schools

The Assam government has decided to introduce a legislation banning corporal punishment in schools with provision for prosecuting errant teachers including suspension and even termination from service. The Assam Corporal Punishment for Educational Institutions (Prohibition) Bill, 2010 would be placed before the Assam assembly for passage when it meets on second March for its Budget session. According to Mr Mohsin Ali, the Assam director of secondary education, final draft of the bill is ready. The decision to introduce the bill follows a recent UNICEF study that gave Assam schools of topping the list of Indian schools where corporal punishment of students were rampant.<br/>
