Assam govt appeals for not to take out rallies in order to maintain peace

Assam government has urged various organisations and political parties not to take out processions, rallies and marches which may aggravate tension and disturb social fabric in the wake of recent violence. The State Government has also sought cooperation from all to restore peace and harmony. Our correspondent reports that the overall situation in the violence hit areas of Lower Assam has improved but security forces are maintaining a strict vigil to avert any possible disturbance.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked concerned departments to make temporary arrangements to reopen schools and colleges in violence hit areas of Bodoland Territorial Area Districts and neighbouring Dhubri district. Commissioner-Secretary of the state Elementary Education L S Changsan said classes have already started in 20 schools in Kokrajhar district. Special arrangements have also been made to resume classes at all the remaining educational institutions. Classes are also likely to be start soon in Dhubri district. Temporary camps are being set up in some areas for this purpose. The education department is also planning to start classes on shift basis where schools are being used as relief camps. Nearly 2 lakh 42 thousand people have taken shelter in 234 relief camps.
