Assam government to appoint over 40,000 teachers

Assam Government will soon appoint 28,000 teachers on contractual basis and 12,800 teachers on permanent basis. This was disclosed by the State Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma while reacting to a Supreme Court verdict vacating the Gauhati High Court ban on teacher recruitment. He said at present there are 90,000 posts of teachers lying vacant in schools across Assam. The apex court bench headed by Justice Deepak Verma on Wednesday set aside the High Court order of March 5, 2010 on a petition by the Assam Government contending that the ban was causing difficulties in the running of elementary schools to fulfill the mandate of compulsory education under the Right to Education Act.AIR Correspondent reports that the Supreme Court order also paved the way for recruitment of around 52,000 candidates who had been qualified in the first-ever Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) conducted by the State Government in December, 2011.
