Assam gets back to normal; PM pays visit today

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will visit the violence-hit Kokrajhar district of Assam today to review the steps taken to control the situation. He is also likely to visit two relief camps and will review the relief and rehabilitation measures taken by the state government. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will accompany the Prime Minister.

The Centre has deputed two teams of doctors and nurses to the violence-hit areas in the state. Union Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth reviewed the relief and medical arrangements for the victims of violence in a videoconference with Assam Chief Secretary Naba Kumar Das. He also reviewed arrangements to ensure that food and other supplies were available in adequate measures.

The situation is limping back to normalcy in the violence hit districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri. Talking to newsmen in Guwahati, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said there were no reports of any fresh incidents except for the two cases in Baksa district. He urged all sections of people to maintain peace and harmony.

Meanwhile, the death toll has mounted to 48. Night curfew continued in the violence-hit districts as a precautionary measure. Thirteen columns of Army, Assam Police and 65 companies of Para-military forces have been deployed to maintain law and order situation. Flag marches by the Army and patrolling by the Assam Police and Para-military forces have been intensified. Around 3,92,000 people are being sheltered in 270 relief camps. Food and drinking water and other relief materials are being provided in the relief camps. Five truckloads of medicines are being sent to Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Kaksa, Chirang and Dhubri districts.
