Assam agriculture department is preparing a roadmap to endure the possible adverse impacts of global warming and climate change. Against the backdrop of the state’s vulnerability to the ill-effects of climate change, the agriculture department is preparing the roadmap for minimising the effect and adoption of a multi-pronged mitigation strategy.<br/><br/>According to Assam agriculture department sources,cropland management, restoration of degraded land, providing alternative to jhum (slash-and-burn) cultivation, organic farming, improved water management, crop diversification, integrated plant nutrition supply system, integrated pest management, etc., besides facilitating enhanced research on agro and allied subjects are to be undertaken under the strategy.<br/><br/>Besides, to discard the widespread practice of jhum cultivation in the hilly areas responsible for soil degradation and having other adverse ecological fallouts, the ICAR has developed a multi-storey cropping system as an alternative to jhum, and this will be popularized through motivational campaigns.<br/><br/>Steps will be taken up to check the continuous soil erosion in barren land by introducing soil-bonding grasses, bushes and herbs using conservation tillage. The use of potash will also be popularized for resisting the effects of climate change especially during water-stressed conditions.<br/><br/>
