In Assam, the overall flood situation continued to be grim as the Brahmaputra and its major tributaries are flowing above the danger level. The surging flood waters have breached embankments of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries at 25 locations so far.
Our correspondent reports that Assam government has sanctioned adequate relief material and also sanctioned additional financial powers to the Deputy Commissioners to expedite relief and rescue operations.
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh yesterday assured all possible help to the Assam government to deal with the flood situation in the state. A PMO statement said, Dr. Singh called up Assam state Health Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma to enquire about the condition in the state.
The Prime minister also spoke to Defence Minister A K Antony urging to provide full army assistance for rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.
