In Assam, the overall flood situation continued to be grim particularly in Dhemaji, Jorhat, Barpeta and Sonitpur district. Five people died today at Kathalbari in Goalpara district in a boat accident while body of another 2 persons were recovered in Nalbari. With this, death toll mounted to 26 in the recent wave of flood. Road communication in a few areas disrupted as flood water overtopped National Highway, 37 and 51 numbers at Morigaon and Sonitpur district.NDRF , State Disaster Response Force and Army personnel are being engaged in rescue and relief works. North East Frontier Railway sources said that around 2500 stranded passengers have been evacuated in Dima Hasao district. They had been stuck in various stations for the last 4 days as the landslide disrupted the movement of rail services in the district.National Disaster Response Force,SDRF and army has intensified the relief and rescue operation in Barpeta,Sonitpur and Majuli.More than half of Majuli, the world’s largest river island in Jorhat district has been submerged.NDRF will resume rescue operation tomorrow morning. State agriculture minister Nilmani Sen Deka said that flood affected around 9 lakh population of 21 districts.Relief camps have been set up in most of the affected areas by the district administarion.Medical teams have also been deployed to prevent any kind of water borne diseases.Most of ministers visited the flood affected district and instructed the administration to expedite the rescue and relief works.
