In Assam, the overall flood situation in Dhemaji and Jorhat districts remained grim, some new areas have been submerged by flood water. In Dhemaji district, devastation by surging waters of Jia Dhol river continued for the second day today. Dwelling houses and grenaries of as many as 35 families in Kechukhanda Kachari gaon and Kechukhanda Kochgaon were washed away by the high water currents of the river. Most of the rivers in the state are maintaining a rising trend following heavy rainfalls in the catchment areas. According to official reports, around 35 thousand population in 30 villages have been affected in the current wave of flood in the district. The affected people are taking shelter in national highways and other high places. Meanwhile, the rising water of the river Brahmaputra submerged around 70 per cent localities of Lower Majuli island in Jorhat district. Surface communication in the biggest river island has been disrupted as most of the roads are submerged. The district authorities have taken up relief and rescue works in the flood-hit areas on a war footing. Country boats are being pressed into service for distribution of food and relief items.
