Assam flood situation remains grim, 18 killed & 10 missing

The flood situation in most of the districts of Assam remains grim as the Brahmaputra is flowing above danger level and also maintains a rising trend in Guwahati, Golapara and Dhubri. Kamrup Metro district administration has taken precautionary measures by putting sandbags to strengthen the bank of mighty Brahmaputra at some places. Parts of Pandu, Gaarigaon, Adabari, Sunsali has been submerged. The Brahmaputra is flowing 1.06 meter above the danger level in Guwahati as per Central Water Commission report. The flood condition also remains critical in Morigaon district. Surging water breached the Guwahati to Nagaon alternative highway via Marigaon at Mayang and disrupted vehicle movements. So far 18 people have died and 10 went missing in flood related incidents. The number of affected people due to flood wave has gone up to around 21 lakhs in 16 districts. The ferry service between Neamatighat of Jorhat to Majuli Island has been resumed as water level of the Brahmaputra receded. But educational institutions have been closed at Majuli. Three lakh 85 thousand people are being sheltered at 297 reliefs and 124 makeshift camps in 13 districts.21 animals have died at Kaziranga National Park in recent flood. Forest department and members of NGOs, local people rescued a few inhabitants of the park. Various state ministers are visiting flood hit areas and assured all possible helps.
State Health department has intensified medical care to the flood affected persons. A team of doctors and Para-medical has reached Majuli today from Jorhat. So far 165 special medical teams have been deployed. Mobile Medical Units have also been pressed into service. Four thousand 500 ORS packets and three thousand 300 water purify tablets have been distributed.21 specialized flood relief task force of army along with National and State Disaster Response Force are undertaking relief and rescue works.
