The Assam Government has decided to set up a border trade centre along Bhutan boundary at Darranga. The move is aimed at enhancing business with the neighbouring country. The cost of the project has been estimated at Rs 18 crore. The project proposal has already been submitted to the Centre for its approval.Assam shares around 262 kilometres unfenced borders with Bhutan.The north-eastern state is considered to be a major trade partner of the neighbouring country in terms of electricity, cement, timber and wood products, handloom, handicrafts, minerals, petroleum products, machinery, food items, fruits and vegetables.According to official sources, imports from India to Bhutan off late touched Rs 23.3 billion, which constituted 80 per cent of country’s total imports. Bhutan’s exports to India amounted to Rs 20.5 billion rupees and constituted 94 per cent of its total exports.
