Assam ethnic violence: Death toll mounts to 41, CM visits Kokrajhar

In Assam, the situation in Kokrajar, Chirang and Dhubri district has improved to some extent as there have been no reports of arson today. District administration relaxed curfew in Kokrajhar district from 9 AM to 12 noon, while in Chirang district it is from 12 noon to 5 PM. People in good numbers came out of their homes to buy essential commodities. On the other hand, indefinite curfew continues in some areas in Dhubri district.

Official sources said that last night one miscreant was died in police firing at Dhubri-Kokrajhar border areas.With this death toll has gone up to 41. Assam Police so far arrested 140 person involved in the ongoing violence. On the other hand, 3 people sustained bullet injury last night in Baska district. They have rushed to hospital. State Home Secretary confirmed that the incident was not related to the ongoing violence. Meanwhile, rail services restored in the state. Additional security forces have been deployed to restore train movement.

Assam Chief Minister visited Kokrajhar district and took stock of the situation. He met senior government officials and the inmates of the relief camps. A 16 member delegation of state Legislative Assembly also visited Chirang district today. They met local people and urged all to maintain peace and harmony.
