Assam: Death toll mount to 7 in Goalpara district firing

In Assam, the death toll has gone up to seven in Goalpara district firing .Six people were killed by Garo National Liberation Army last night at Gendabari village in indiscriminate firing while one person succumbs to injuries later. Another 9 persons were undergoing treatment in Guwahati and Goalpara.

Meanwhile, eight fixed pickets are being set up in Goalpara district to ensure free and fair Rabha Hasong Council polls to be held from 13th of this month in three phases.

Talking to AIR Correspondent, state Home Secretary G D Tripathi said that security have been tightened in Assam-Meghalaya border to prevent militants from escaping after committed crime. District administration is likely to impose restrictions during night times in bordering areas. He said, security forces have earlier foiled attempts of the Garo militants who were trying their best to derail election process.

28 additional companies of central security forces have been deployed in the district. A massive search operation is on to nab the culprits who were behind the brutal killing of innocent civilian.

Assam government has also decided to tighten security of the candidates who are contesting in the poll. Personal guards will be given to those who have more threat prospects. Assam government will give an ex-gratia of 6 lakh rupees will be given to the family members of those who killed in the firing and also bear the medical expenses of injured.
