Assam has contributed 65 percent of total Endi or Eri silk in the country in 2011. Official sources said that Assam produced over 1700 metric tonne Endi. The state has a total cultivation area of around 3 thousand hectares of Endi silk worm.AIR correspondent reports that Endi worms are reared in almost whole of Brahmaputra valley, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao district.Eri culture is an integral part of tradition and culture of Assam and other North Eastern states. Among all districts in the state, Kamrup is leading in production with 35 thousand kilogram. Assam has also 21 endi silk spinning training enters. Eri silk has exclusive thermal property, which is as warm as wool and soft in nature and is used in making warm clothing like shawl. The price of an endi shawl ranges from 600- 1000 rupees. Various fashion accessories like ties, scarves, handkerchiefs made with eri yarn has great demand in international market. Eri silkworm pupae are delicacy for a few ethnic groups of the region. A large number of families are practising eri silkworm rearing as a source of livelihood.
