In Assam, the ruling Congress has swept the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council polls by winning 15 of the 26 seats.With this, the party has retained the power of the Hill Tribal Council for the third consecutive terms.Elections for the 11th Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council were held on 4th of this month and all the results declared yesterday.The People’s Alliance for Peace Agreement (PAPA) won 8 seats and three seats went to Independents.Fourteen seats are required for a party or coalition to form the Council. The newly-elected members of the Council will take oath at the district headquarter Diphu tomorrow.This is for the first time that the election to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council was held under the supervision of the State Election Commission. Prior to this, the Hill Areas Development Department conducted the polls of the Council.The elections to the Council have assumed great significance as it was held after the recent signing of the peace agreement in New Delhi by the United People’s Democratic Solidarity with both the State and Central Governments.Almost 78 per cent of the 5.6 lakh voters exercised their franchise to elect their representatives among 128 contesting candidates.
