Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has instituted a judicial inquiry into the police firing incident at Bechimari weekly market in Darrang district. He announced three lakh rupees as compensation to each of those killed. Mr. Gogoi has also assured Jute growers of taking steps to ensure they get right prices for their produce. Four marginal jute cultivators were killed and 17 others sustained injuries yesterday when police opened fire to control an irate mob, demanding the right price for their jute produce.The incident followed a blockade of NH 52 by the jute growers and an attack on policemen with stones and bricks leading to the police firing.
