Assam celebrating spring festival

In Assam, popular spring festival of the Mishing tribe- Ali-Ai-Ligang- is being celebrated with traditional gaiety and religious fervour today.It is mainly an agricultural festival and celebrated in a grand manner in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and other Mishing-dominated areas bordering Arunachal Pradesh.On this day, the Mishing people start sowing paddy in the field ritually. The Mishings also display their cultural acumen through this most vibrant festival that continues for five days. Community feasting, ploughing and fishing are the main attraction of the festival.The State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has greeted the people on the occassion. In a message, Mr. Gogoi said the spirit of the festival will contribute a lot towards fostering unity, amity and brotherhood among different sections of the society.
