The Assam Cabinet has approved the draft peace accord between the Government and the insurgent outfit United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) of Karbi Anglong.The State Government spokesman and Education Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma disclosed this to newsmen at Dispur last evening. He said the Cabinet has approved the peace accord framed by the Central Government with minor amendment.Dr. Sharma informed that the accord will be signed with the banned organization at any time after it is finally adopted by the Centre. The Centre had sent the draft peace accord for ratification by the State Government this week after failure of last round of talks on Monday last.AIR Correspondent reports that the tripartite peace accord between the UPDS, the Centre and the State Government which was supposed to be signed in New Delhi on Monday last, could not be materialized with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi expressing ignorance about the outfit’s demand of dissolving the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and setting up a neutral interim administration in its place.The underground outfit- UPDS was formed in March 1999 with the merger of two ultra outfits in Karbi Anglong hill district of Assam.The outfit was active in the two hill districts of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar with involvement in killing of innocent people, kidnappings and other anti-social activities.The outfit signed cease-fire agreement for one year with the Centre on May 23, 2002 and later it was extended time-to-time. The outfit held six rounds of peace talks with the Central and the State Government representatives.
