Barpeta constituency in Assam is witnessing a tough contest as prominent candidates are there in fray for the Lok sabha polls taking place on the 24th of this month. AIR Correspondent reports candidates are on the campaign trail vying to win over voters through road shows and public meetings.
Barpeta constituency spread over districts of Barpeta, Nalbari and Bongaigaon has several high profile candidates trying their luck with the electorate. The Congress has fielded sitting MP Ismail Hussein while BJP has given ticket to the former Asom Gana Parishad President Chandra Mohan Patowary . AIUDF has nominated party MLA Sirajuddin Ajmal while Asom Gana Parishad has fielded sitting MLA Phani Bhusan Choudhury. Besides, former MP of CPI -M Uddhab Barman is also in the race while Trinmool Congress has fielded Dr. Pervez Ahmed, son of former President of India, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. Areas under this constituency experience flood and soil erosion, suffer unemployment and poor road connectivity.
But over 14 lakh voters have found most of these issues missing in election campaigns. While the BJP is heavily banking on its leader Narendra Modi, the Congress has criticized the Gujrat model of development. The Asom Gana Parishad blames the national parties for their alleged neglect towards Assam.
