Assam: Arrangements complete for first phase of polling in 62 assembly segments

Highest ever security blanket has been provided in the state to ensure free and fair polling in the first phase of Assembly election. Polling in 62 constituencies in 13 districts including Barak Valley, Upper Assam and two hill districts will be held tomorrow. The voting will begin at 7 am and continue till 3PM. Quoting top security officials, our correspondent reports that though all the major militant outfits in the state have headed for peace talks, the threats from splinter groups are still there. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has censured Assam health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for violating the model code of conduct while filing his nominations. Another Congress candidate, Jamaluddin, has also been reprimanded for holding an election meeting in an educational institute without prior permission. Sarma, the Congress candidate for the Jalukbari assembly constituency, was issued a show cause notice by the district election officer of Kamrup Metropolitan district on 25th of last month. In his reply, Sarma had denied the allegation but the EC did not find Sarma’s reply satisfactory. On the other hand, Jamaluddin, the Congress candidate for the Badarpur seat denied allegation that party workers had arranged a meeting in the premises of a school. The EC, dissatisfied with his reply, censured him too.
