In Assam, Independence Day is being celebrated across the state with much enthusiasm. Defying boycott calls of militant outfits, people from all walks of life have participated in the celebration. The main function was held at Khanapara in Guwahati where Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi hoisted the tricolour. In his speech, Chief Minister urged all militant groups to shun violence and join mainstream for the development of the state. He warned that strict action will be taken against militants if they do not obey it. Referring the recent Assam – Nagaland border issue in Golaghat district, the Chief Minister urged the Centre to take steps for peace by solving border disputes. Gogoi also said that slew of measures have been taken for the development of the state. The Chief Minister said, thrust has been given in E- Governance to bring transparency. He announced that a new Commission will be set up for elderly persons. Gogoi said that state government will also take measures for the welfare of the differently abled people. Mentioning that Assam suffered a loss of 10 thousand crore rupees in 2012 due to bandhs, Gogoi stressed to end the bandh culture. Various cultural programmes have been organised in the state on this occasion.
