In Assam, Republic day is being celebrated across the state with much enthusiasm. A strict security arrangement has been made by the security forces to avoid any untoward incident. Governor J B Patnaik has unfurled the tricolor at Khanapara in Guwahati in the main function of Republic day. National flags have been hoisted at government offices, schools and other institutions.
Addressing the gathering Mr. Patnaik said that Assam has undergone a sea-change over the last 12 years and is rapidly developing as vibrant economy. He said that due to the steps taken by the Assam government, 13 militant groups have laid down arms and joined mainstream. The Governor has also urged other militant groups to shun violence and return to the path of development.
He said that government has increased the monthly pension of freedom fighters to 15 thousand rupees from existing 8 thousand rupees.Mr. Patnaik added that the Centre has agreed to increase the number of Foreigners Tribunal from 36 to 100 to detect and deport of foreigners residing illegally in the state. He said that the Assam government is committed for an efficient, transparent and corruption free administration at all level. Defying boycott calls of militant outfits, people from all sections of life have participated in the Republic day celebration.
