Assam: 21 killed in landslides in Barak Valley region

Landslides due to heavy rainfall claimed 21 lives in Barak Valley of Assam and disrupted train services. Landslides at 3 different places in Hailakandi district killed 8 persons while 7 lost their lives in Jayapur of Cachar district. 6 deaths were reported from Kaliganj of Karimganj district too. Environment and forest minister Parimal Shukla Baidya visited landslide sites in Hailakandi.<br />'' <br />''President Ramnath Kovind expressed his condolences to the families of the victims via twitter. Following directions from the Chief Minister, the Cachar district administration handed ex-gratia cheques of Rs 4 lakh to kin of each deceased today itself. Cheques in other 2 affected districts will be handed over tomorrow.<br />'' <br />''<span style="color: #222222;">On the other hand, CPRO, NF Railways informed that Agartala-New Delhi Rajdhani special and Bhairabi-Hatia Shramik special trains were terminated at Badarpur Jn last night due heavy rainfall and landslide near Maibong railway station. Passengers were carried back to there originating stations. Chennai-Jhiribam Shramik special was also short terminated at Guwahati and passengers are being taken to their destination by road with help of concerned district administrations.</span>
