Asia's oldest football tournament – Durand Cup begins today

Asia's oldest football tournament- Durand Cup has kicked off its 131st edition in Kolkata today and Imphal will witness its inaugural Durand Cup match on the day after tomorrow. The Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande will be visiting Manipur to witness the inaugural match to be held at Khuman Lampak Stadium situated in Imphal.

The inaugural match in Imphal will be played between NEROCA FC and TRAU FC and both are the football teams of Manipur. The State government has already taken up necessary arrangements for the historic football event.
 
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh today visited the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex and review the arrangements taken up for the Durand Cup. The Chief Minister appreciated the officials of the State Youth Affairs and Sports Department and Indian Army personnel for working day and night to properly arrange the set up of the tournament.

Briefing the media persons at the inspection site, Shri Biren said that the Sports Department in consultation with technical experts and with the support of army personnel had developed the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium in a short span, making it one of the best football grounds in the eastern zone. He informed that the Government is planning to develop six more such football grounds before the next edition of the Durand Cup.
