In Tamil Nadu, the biggest desalination plant in South Asia will be inaugurated at Minjur in North Chennai this evening. Chief Minister M Karunanidhi will inaugurate the Rs 600-crore plant. It will supply 100 million litres a day of potable water to meet the growing water requirement of the metropolis.The plant would be operated for 25 years on design, build, own, operate and transfer basis by Chennai Water Desalination Ltd , a special purpose vehicle set up for the purpose. The company will supply water to the Chennai Metropolitan Water and Sewerage Supply Board at a rate of 48.74 rupees per thousand litres.AIR chennai correspondent reports that a second desalination plant with a similar capacity is being set up at Nemmeli on East Coast Road. The plant is expected to be commissioned by the end of next year.
