In Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.8 percent; and South Korea's Kospi climbed 0.1 percent. But China's Shanghai Composite index fell 2.6 percent; Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 1.5 percent; and Singapore's Straits Times index decreased 0.1 percent.
