Asian markets ended mixed today. Hong Kong's Hang Seng surged 2.2 percent, and China's Shanghai Composite index jumped 0.7 percent after China's industrial output rose lower-than-expected 3.5 percent in May. May's expansion marked the slowest growth since February. Retail sales, a key gauge of consumption, jumped 12.7 percent in May, but it was lower than the 18.4 percent gain in April.
Singapore's Straits Times index gained 0.8 percent. Japan's Nikkei-225 ended flat. But South Korea's Kospi lost 0.4 percent.
Markets in Europe declined as investors awaited the latest monetary policy decision from the European Central Bank or ECB. When the ECB meets today, it is anticipated to raise its benchmark policy rate by another 25 basis points.
London's FTSE-100 was trading flat; Germany's DAX declined 0.4 percent while France's CAC-40 dipped 0.6 percent when the report last came in.
