Asian Games: Swaran Singh bags bronze in men's single sculls

In the Incheon Asian Games, India bagged three Bronze medals – 2 in Rowing and one in Shooting — this morning, to take the overall tally to 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 13 Bronze. In Rowing, Sawarn Singh clinched the Bronze in the Men's Singles Sculls Finals, while India finished third in the Men's Eight Final to win the third Bronze in Rowing in these Games. Dushyant Dushiant had bagged the first Bronze yesterday.The trio of Shreyasi Singh, Shagun Chowdhary and Varsha Varman bettered a rather sour day for Indian shooters. They ended third in the Women's Team Trap Finals, with a total of 279 points. This was India's 6 Bronze in Shooting. Our only Gold, uptil now, had also come in Shooting through Jitu Rai. In the individual Trap event, Shagun was eighth, Shreyasi 12th and Varsha 14th.The Men's Trap event is underway.Earlier, Indian shooters, including Gagan Narang, failed to make their mark in Men's 50-metre Rifle Prone event. In the individual event, none of the Indians could qualify for the Finals. In the qualification, Gagan ended 14th, Joydeep Karmakar 10th and Hariom Singh at the 29th position. The trio finished at the fourth spot in the team event. The Chinese, which finished with the Gold, broke the World record.In the Men's 25-metre standard pistol Team event, the Indian team of Gurpreet Singh, Samaresh Jung and Mahaveer Singh finished fifth. In the individual section Finals, Gurpeet missed by a whisker from bagging the Bronze.In other results, Indian Archers stormed into the semi-finals of the Compound Men's and Compound Women's Team events. In the quarterfinals, while the Men's team defeated Malaysia, the Women's team beat Kazakhstan. For a place in the finals, the Indian Men will play Iran, and the Indian eves will meet Chinese Taipei, later today.In Badminton, P. Kashyap progressed to the pre-quarterfinals, beating Iqbal Shekib of Afghanistan, 2-0. Saina Nehwal is now playing for a quarterfinal berth. PV Sindhu will play later today.In Tennis, Sanam Singh and Ankita Raina booked pre-quarterfinal berths.In Swimming and Cycling, none of the Indians could progress in their respective categories.The Indian Men's Hockey team will take on Pakistan in a group match this afternoon.In Boxing, Devendro Laishram and Manoj Kumar will play their opening round bouts. Shiva Thapa and Akhil Kumar advanced to the pre-quarterfinals yesterday.China is currently at the top of the medals tally, with Korea second and Japan third. India is 15th.
