Asian Games: Indian men's hockey team strikes gold, qualifies for 2016 Rio Olympics

India won the prestigious hockey gold on Thursday by defeating defending champion Pakistan in process also booking 2016 Rio Olympic berth. Indian contingent also bagged four more medals.

In Hockey wait of 16 years ended as India men's team defeated Pakistan to win the gold of Asian Games. In the process India also qualified for 2016 Rio Olympics.

In a nerve wrecking game India defeated Pakistan 4-2 on a penalty shootout. The match was evenly poised. Pakistan took an early lead in the first quarter on Rizwan Mohammad's goal.

India equalised the game from Kothajit Singh's goal in the second quarter. The match was then logged at one goal each till the end. Hence, game went to penalty shoot for the Gold.

Within minutes after winning the Hockey Gold India clinched the 4×400 metres women's relay Gold, by creating a new Asian games record.

The team of Priyanka Pawar, Tintu Lukka, Mandeep Kaur and Poovamma Raju with a time of 3 minute 28.68 seconds sprinted their way to win the Asian Games gold. A bronze also came from Inderjeet Singh as he bagged bronze in shot put with a throw of 19.63 metres.

India bagged two more bronze from boxing. Pugilist Sathish Kumar in +91 kg weight class and Vikas Krishan in 75 kg weight class lost their respective semi finals to bag bronze.

Among Thursday's results, the Indian Men's and Women's Kabaddi team stormed into the Finals. Indians will face Iranian counter parts in final on Friday.

In Table Tennis, Soumyajit Ghosh, Ankita Das and Manika Batra bowed out after losing their respective matches.

In Volleyball, the Indian Men's team defeated Thailand in the 5th to 8th match. However, the Women's team lost to Hong Kong in the Classification 7th-8th Place.

In Taekwondo, Saurav, Shiv Kumar, Rekha Rani Gogoi and Shreya Singh made exit at respective stages.

With 9 Gold, 9 Silver and 37 Bronze, India is at 9th position on the medals table.
