The National Stadium in New Delhi, venue of the first Asian Games in 1951, on Saturday witnessed the lighting of the torch for the17th Asiad to be held at Incheon, South Korea from September 19 to October 4. The ceremony that returned to India after a gap of 63 years, saw top Indian sports persons Gagan Narang, K Sanjita Charu, Vinod Kumar Tiwari and Amit Kumar among the 40 chosen ones run a relay with the torch, lit by solar power, on a five kilometer course on the Rajpath. Some of the gold medal lists in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow also participated in the relay besides several celebrities. Among the dignitaries present at the ceremony were Minister of State for Sports Sarbananda Sonowal, Korean Ambassador LeeJoo-gyu, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president NRamachandran and Incheon Asian Games Organising Committee president Kim Young Soo. The torch will travel through Weihei, China to arrive at Incheon on August 13 where it will be combined with a separate flame lit on mount Mani at Ganghwa island the previous day. The opening ceremony of the Games will be held on September 19at Incheon city, South Korea. The 16-day sporting event will conclude on October 4.
