Asia Cup: Pak beat B'desh by 21 runs in first ODI

Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 21 runs in the thrilling opening cricket match of Asia Cup tournament, in Dhaka in the inaugural match late last evening. Winning the toss at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium at Mirpur in Dhaka, Bangladesh skipper Mushfiquir Rahim decided to bowl first. An opening partnership of 135 runs between Mohammed Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed put Pakistan on track for a big score. But some splendid bowling by Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hassan and Shahadat Hossain triggered off a middle order collapse helping the hosts to restrict Pakistan to 262 runs for eight wickets. Chasing a target of 263 runs, opener Tamim Iqbal set the tone for Bangladesh's innings with a valuable 64 runs before being bowled out by Mohammed Hafeez in the 29th over.Hafeez then picked up the wicket of Mahmudallah in the very next ball. It was then left to Shakib Al Hassan to lead the run chase as Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim also fell for a low score leaving Bangladesh at 135 for the loss of five wickets. Shakib along with Nasir Hossain kept the score board ticking to take Bangladesh past the two hundred mark. Umar Gul then provided Pakistan the breakthrough, bowling out Nasir Hossain for forty seven runs when Bangladesh reached 224 runs in the forty third over. Shakib continued to battle to take Bangladesh to victory but wickets kept falling at the other end regularly. Eventually Umar Gul struck the final blow, bowling out Shakib Al Hassan for 64 runs to wrap up Bangladesh's innings for 241 runs and give his team a twenty one run victory.Defending Champions India will now take on Sri Lanka in the second match of the tournament tomorrow.
