Ashwin wins Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Cricketer of the year

Ravichandran Ashwin has become only the third Indian player ever to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy after being named the ICC Cricketer of the Year besides the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year. The other two Indians who won the Award earlier were Rahul Dravid in 2004 and Sachin Tendulkar in 2010. Overall, the off-spinner from Chennai is the 12th player to win the prestigious Trophy. Ashwin was also adjudged the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year. This has made him only the second India player after Dravid to bag the two coveted prizes in the same year. During the voting period, which ran from September 14, 2015 to September 20, 2016, Ashwin played eight Tests in which he took 48 wickets and scored 336 runs. Ashwin also claimed 27 wickets in 19 T20 Internationals. Ashwin had finished 2015 as the number-one ranked Test bowler in the world, a position he twice reclaimed in 2016. ICC Chief Executive David Richardson has congratulated Ashwin on his fabulous season. The Indian is justifiably now being counted among the best spinners of his generation, Richardson said. Among other awards, South Africa's wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock was named ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year. Carlos Brathwaite of the West Indies won the ICC T20 International Performance of the Year award for his match-winning 34 not out in the ICC World Twenty20 final against England in Kolkata in 2016. Bangladesh fast bowling sensation Mustafizur Rahman was named ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year award. Afghanistan's flamboyant wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad also won the ICC Associate and Affiliate Cricketer of the Year after he finished as the leading ODI run-scorer with 699 runs in 16 one-day matches. The award serves to recognize the efforts in all international matches of outstanding cricketers from teams from the 10 non-Test-playing nations.
