Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Ashok Chavan today filed an 8-page affidavit before the two-member Adarsh inquiry panel headed by retired Bombay High Court judge J A Patil. In his affidavit, Chavan claimed that he did nothing illegal during his tenure as State Revenue Minister and said that decisions regarding Adarsh society were taken by the then Chief Minister Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh. He also stated that the land on which controversial Adarsh society now stands belongs to the state government. Chavan added that sanctions given by him to the Adarsh society were as per the Government Rule of 9th July, 1999. In his affidavit, he also claimed that the land was actually allotted to Adarsh society in July 2004 when he was not the Revenue Minister. Chavan said that files related to the Adarsh society were scrutinized by bureaucrats. He claimed that allotting Adarsh society membership to civilians was not his decision and added that the membership eligibility was checked and approved by the Collectorate.
