Foreign Ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are holding an emergency meeting today in Jakarta to discuss possible solutions to the Thai-Cambodian border conflict. The meeting of the 10-nation regional group was convened at the request of the United Nations Security Council, which met last week after four days of Thai-Cambodian border clashes that killed at least 10 people on both sides. At issue is an area of land adjacent to Preah Vihear, an 11th century Hindu temple. The Council advised the Asian neighbors to pursue a peaceful solution to the conflict within the ASEAN framework. Thailand and Cambodia have long fought over the historic site. In 1962, the International Court of Justice in The Hague awarded the temple to Cambodia but did not comment on the surrounding area. UNESCO's listing of the temple as a World Heritage Site in 2008 sparked renewed friction. Each side has blamed the another for starting this month's clashes.
