South East Asian leaders have urged Myanmar's military authorities to hold free and inclusive elections later this year. In a statement at the end of a summit of the ASEAN regional grouping in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi the leaders said the move would help stabilize the country and focus on development. There has been international criticism of election laws enacted recently by Myanmar's military rulers which barred the detained Myanmar's opposition leader Aung Sung Suu Kyi from participating in the forthcoming vote. ASEAN leaders also pledged to work together to sustain recovery from the global financial crisis and agreed to establish a mechanism that will help resolve regional conflict.
