India is expected to seek larger investments from China, particularly in the National Manufacturing and Investment Zones being set up in India. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will meet the outgoing Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao today on the sidelines of the ASEAN and East Asia Summits in Cambodia. Speaking on board Prime Minister’s special aircraft, Commerce Minister Anand Sharma yesterday said that India expects continuity and stability in its relations with China, its largest trading partner. The Commerce Minister said, in the past, India had taken up these issues both at Prime Minister and Commerce Minister’s level. Mr. Sharma is accompanying Dr. Singh to Phnom Penh for the summits. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh held separate meetings with the President of Philippines. Secretary, East, Sanjay Singh said the issue of terrorism and menace of piracy figured prominently in the discussions. In his discussions with Singapore Prime Minister, intensifying economic engagement with the ASEAN and concluding comprehensive economic partnership agreement hogged the lime light. On the side lines of the summit some more bilateral meetings are expected to take place.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday arrived at the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh to attend the two regional summits which begaan yesterday. Southeast Asian leaders have already begun discussions with a focus on territorial issues, human rights, economic cooperation and ethnic unrest in Myanmar. Leaders of the 10-nation ASEAN bloc are expected to adopt a declaration guaranting human rights protection for the population of the region. U.S. President Barack Obama will meet with ASEAN leaders today and tomorrow. He is expected to raise concerns about long-standing human-rights problems.
