Arun Jaitley favours raising public spending to boost growth

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has favoured increasing public spending to boost economic growth. Speaking at a function to celebrate transformation of MGNREGA in New Delhi today, the Finance Minister said private sector is not contributing much, and added that monsoon has also not supported growth in last two years. He said India has been growing by 7 to 7.5 per cent, and all sectors have to contribute for the country to accelerate. <br/><br/>Mr Jaitley also complimented Rural Development Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh for bringing in transformation in MGNREGA. He said modifications are required in schemes with the passage of time. He added that MGNREGA underwent change and new initiatives were taken to reach its benefits to people in a better way. <br/><br/>The Finance Minister said although India has no control over fall in international commodity, mineral and oil prices as well as global slowdown, there is a need to create one more engine of growth by giving funds to the rural sector. He said more money should be spent on rural electrification, irrigation and roads to witness development of rural economy.<br/><br/>Speaking on the occasion, Rural Development Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh said MGNREGA has reached 8 crore rural population and added that the target this year is to reach 11 crore people. He also said 18 lakh MGNREGA workers will be provided skill development training. MGNREGA today completes ten years of implementation.
