Arson attack on media org: Lankan journos protest in Colombo

Sri Lankan journalists on Tuesday protested on the streets of Colombo against the recent arson attack on one of the private media organization, which according to its editor was carried out by a powerful section of the government. The journalists are demanding an independent investigation into the incident. The office of the Lanka e news, which is considered critical of the government here, was set on fire in the wee hours of Monday morning reportedly , by a group of men who broke into the office of the news website.Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Government has condemned the torching of Lanka-e-News as an act of criminals to discredit the regime. Soon after the incident , Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa had ordered the Police Chief to conduct an urgent inquiry into the attack. According to latest report, one of the suspect involved in the incident has been taken into custody.There have been a series of attacks against journalists and media institutions n Sri Lanka in the last few years but no arrests have been made so far. Prageeth Ekneligoda, a columnist for LankaeNews.com, disappeared a year ago and is suspected to have been abducted.A total of 17 journalists and media employees have been killed in Sri Lanka in the past decade, prompting to rights groups to say many local reporters exercise self-censorship to avoid confrontations with the authorities.The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said attacks against journalists and news organisations have continued in Sri Lanka despite the end of the country's civil war in May 2009.
