In Assam, around a hundred coconut processing units are to be set up under Coconut Technology Mission during the 12th Plan period. The step has been taken to generate more employment opportunities and increase the production of coconut. This was stated by the Chairman of the Coconut Development Board, Mr. T. K. Jose at Guwahati last night. He said, 17, out of the total 27 districts of Assam, produces highest number of coconuts which is more than Kerala. Mr. Jose said the State produces 9130 nuts per hectare per year against the national average of 8303. He said, Assam will be developed as a model state for coconut production during next five years. It has been targeted to produce two lakh seedlings through organic cultivation method in Abhayapuri area of Bongaigaon district of the State next year. Mr. Jose mentioned that India is the third highest producer of coconuts after Philippines and Indonesia. Today is being observed as the World Coconut Day. On this occasion, a function has been organized at Guwahati in Assam. The Coconut Development Board will present national awards to 15 persons and institutions that have excelled in coconut farming in the country. This year Pankaj Das of Hajo village in Assam has been selected as the best coconut farmer among the north-eastern states. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will give away the prizes at a function in Guwahati on Friday.
