Army and IAF chiefs and Navy vice-chief briefed Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, PAC, on the alleged irregularities in the canteen stores supplies. Talking to newsmen in New Delhi Wednesday evening after the discussions, the PAC Chairperson, Mr. Murli Manohar Joshi said, they made a presentation of management of rations in their unit-run canteens. In reply to a query, Mr. Joshi said, they were satisfied with the discussions.The PAC Chairperson further clarified that PAC is not for indictment but for suggesting corrective measures to avoid recurrence of any such incident in future. He also made it clear that the service chiefs were not summoned as projected by the media.The Army Chief Gen. V. K .Singh and Air Chief P V Naik earlier in the day presented their point of view before the PAC headed by senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi.The Navy was represented by Vice Chief D K Deewan, as Navy chief Nirmal Verma is in Indonesia on a pre-scheduled four-day visit which began on Sunday.The PAC had written to the Defence ministry asking for a consultation with the chiefs of the three defence services after a CAG report pointed out irregularities in the supply chain management of rations by Canteen Stores Department.The ministry of defence had advised the service chiefs to appear before the PAC apparently to underline the committee's immense significance.Usually the Defence Secretary attends meetings of the Parliamentary Committees along with Vice Chiefs of the Services.
