Army flag march in violence hit districts of Assam; Death toll rises to 40

In Assam, the army has started flag march in Bodoland Territorial Areas District, BTAD, including violence hit Kokrajhar and Chirang and neighbouring Dhubri district. Army PRO in Tezpur said that 13 columns of the army have been deployed to maintain law and order situation. With the recovery of eight more bodies on Wednesday, the death toll has gone up to 40.

District administration in Chirang issued shoot-at-sight order and also clamped indefinite curfew in Chirang, on Wednesday morning. However, it was relaxed in Kokrajhar district from 8 am to 12 noon. People in good numbers came out of their homes to buy essential commodities. Curfew also continued in some areas of Dhubri district.

An all party delegation of state Legislative Assembly will visit Kokrajhar district later in the day to take stock of the situation. A three member-team of Home Ministry will also visit the violence hit Kokrajhar.

Meanwhile, thousands of passengers stranded at various Railway stations as movement of trains affected due to the ongoing violence. North East Frontier Railway sources said that more than 20 thousand people are stranded as 10 long distance railway cancelled on Wednesday. Railway authorities and local people provide food and drinking water to the passengers at some places.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has instructed all his Ministerial colleagues and senior party leaders to visit violence hit districts to monitor relief and rehabilitations works. Official sources said that additional Para-military forces have been deployed. Around 1 lakh, 70 thousand people who left their homes are being sheltered at relief camps.
