In Assam, with more bodies being recovered on Wednesday in Chirang district, the death toll has mounted to 40 and more than 20 people have been injured in the ongoing violence. The State Home Secretary has confirmed this. While curfew continued in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts, it was relaxed at Dhubri and Bilasipara sub division from 5 to 10 pm on Wednesday night.
A 16-member team of the state Legislative Assembly visited the violence hit Kokrajhar district on Wednesday and took stock of the situation. They also visited relief camps at Bhotgaon and Patakata. Condemning the incidents, all the members of the team urged people to maintain peace and harmony. A two member team of Home Ministry also visited Kokrajhar. The team also met senior government officials and took stock of the law and order situation.
The army has started flag march in the violence hit districts. One thousand, 300 army personnel and 44 additional companies of Para-military forces have been deployed at Kokrajhar, Dhubri and Chirang districts along with Assam Police and Assam Forest Protection Force. 128 relief camps have been set up by the district administrations where 1 lakh, 80 thousand people have taken shelter. Nine civil and 16 police officers have also been deputed additionally to monitor relief works along with law and order situation. Assam government has appealed to the people not to be panicked by rumours being spread by miscreants and urged all to maintain peace and harmony.
Meanwhile, train services resumed this evening. North East Frontier Railway sources said that movements of trains towards Guwahati has already started. Four trains including Garib Rath will leave Guwahati later on Wednesday night. Para-military forces and Railway Police personnel have been deployed to ensure smooth movements of passengers trains.
