In Syria, more than 80 people have been killed and many more injured in an army assault on the city of Hama. Tanks started moving into the city from several directions at dawn. A government statement said two soldiers were killed by gunmen and accused armed groups of burning a police station and vandalising private and public property. BBC reports said, the people of Hama are out in the streets with sticks facing tanks. The latest shelling is being seen as a clear message by the authorities that they will not tolerate large scale demonstrations, especially ahead of the month of Ramadan when protests are expected to grow bigger.The United States press attach’ at the embassy in Damascus has described the events in Hama as full-on warfare by the Syrian government against its own people. Opposition activists in Syria say there have also been army raids on the cities of Deir Es-Zor in the east and Dara in the south. Reports said, ten people were killed in Deir Es Zor and four in Dara.
