The government today introduced a bill in the Lok Sabha aimed at ensuring that Arms licences are issued to the bonafied persons after due verifications. The Arms (Amendment) Bill, 2010, introduced by the Home Minister, Mr. P Chidamabaram also provides for more specific procedure for the grant of licences for acquisition and transfer of arms and ammunition. It will do away with the provision of discretion of the licensing authority to issue the licence without receipt of the report from officer in-charge of the nearest police station. It also provides for punitive action if the report is not sent or sufficient and convincing reasons do not accompany the report within a time frame of two months. AIR correspondent says, the need for introducing the amendment bill has come in the wake of proliferation of arms and ammunition in the country, which can lead to law and order problem.
